Policy & Advocacy

Vermont Family Networks is a non-profit organization dedicated to public policy advocacy on behalf of children, youth, and families in Vermont and throughout the country. Our primary focus is on supporting those who have disabilities and special health needs. We work to maximize our impact on policies that affect children and youth, especially those with disabilities or special health needs, and their families. We collaborate with family leaders, self-advocates, and youth with disabilities or special health needs to develop legislative platforms and provide assistance with testimony (written or spoken). VFN also supports policy and advocacy efforts with the Vermont Early Childhood Advocacy Alliance (VECAA), the VT Coalition for Disability Rights (VCDR), and other partners such as the Developmental Disabilities Council (DDC) and Green Mountain Self-Advocates (GMSA).

WHAT IS AN ADVOCATE

  • A disability advocate is someone who works to promote the rights and overall well-being of children and families affected by disabilities.
  • Parents/guardians are often a main advocate! But ANYONE can become an advocate for themselves and their families!
  • An advocate is often an expert on the child’s disability and needs!
*Our Policy and Advocacy Coordinator does not work directly with families on individual needs or concerns. If you require individualized support, please connect with one of our Family Support Consultants.
