Parent Involvement In School
Parent involvement in school is an essential component to a child’s success and well-being . As a parent, you play an important role in your child’s education, starting as your baby’s first teacher. Remaining involved with your child’s schooling and working together with teachers and administrators as your child goes from kindergarten through high school will make a big difference in your child’s success in school.
Research indicates that when families are involved in their child’s learning and school experience:
• individual test scores go up
• children are more likely to attend and stay in school
• children are less likely to participate in at-risk behaviors
• children are more likely to graduate and undertake other educational pursuits after high school
Vermont Family Network’s programs support parent involvement in schools in a variety of ways:
• workshop trainings and events for families, educators, and administrators
• support, develop, and facilitate school and community based parent groups
• one-on-one support for families with special needs and developmental disabilities
• state wide advocacy
• work directly with schools, districts, and supervisory unions to improve and increase family and community engagement
• work with individual schools to improve school climate
• create and distribute publications and resource materials
• support families with young children in transitioning from early childhood programs to school
