This year, in celebration of our proud past, we are pleased to honor the outstanding work and achievement of our founders, Nancy DiVenere and Connie Curtin. Nancy DiVenere founded Parent to Parent of Vermont in 1984 and served as the Executive Director until 2004. Connie Curtin founded the Vermont Parent Information Center in 1992 and served as the Executive Director until 2008.
There are 5 categories for the VFN Awards:
- VFN Outstanding Youth Award — a youth or young adult who has contributed to disability awareness in their community in a positive way. Winner: Zachary Uerz from Jericho
- VFN Outstanding Leadership Award — A self-advocate or a community volunteer whose leadership has unified people, demonstrated initiative or has caused improvement in the lives of individuals with special needs. Winner: James Austin from Alburg
- VFN Outstanding Professional Award — a person who embodies family-centered beliefs and whose advocacy work has resulted in a community benefit or systemic change for people with special needs. Winner: Marsha Cherington from Lyndonville
- The Nancy DiVenere Award for Outstanding Parent or Caregiver — a person who embodies family-centered beliefs and whose dedication has resulted in the assurance of quality and promotion of systemic change for the community. Winner: Michael Wood-Lewis from Burlington
- The Connie Curtin Award for Excellence in Education — a person whose leadership promotes communication, respect and equity for people with special needs in the area of education. Winner: Joy Wilcox from Montpelier
